Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder And Brain Function

Suffice it to say that when one experiences trauma or multiple traumas, the brain is impacted.

I can attest to this personally.  During the over twenty-year period which I refer to in my book, “When Birds Sing – My Journey from Trauma to Triumph” as a downward spiral into darkness, despair and the abyss, my ability to function in society diminished considerably.  It got to the point that I was unable to work and would have severe panic attacks, sometimes daily.  Until one day, as I write in my memoir, I looked into the mirror and saw myself without the ‘PTSD glasses’.  The reality of my life shown brightly.  Sobbing, I got down on my knees and begged God to help me.  Don’t underestimate the power of becoming humble.

When I tell you that if you’ve suffered trauma (s), your brain has been impacted.   You may feel as though it’s pointless to begin to help yourself – like you’re unsalvageable – thinking you don’t deserve to be on this earth.

That is the injured brain talking and it is a LIE.  Yes, you have injury to your brain but look at all those who suffer from various injuries and continue to live and even THRIVE.

I am writing to you today to tell you that your life is NOT over, you can heal and thrive after trauma.  The brain has the ability to heal itself through a process called neuroplasticity.  Neuroplasticity means that it can reroute information and function around damaged areas.

From my own experience, I know we can help ourselves by taking specific supplements that provide the raw materials that allows the brain to begin to function better.

One supplement that I’ll share from my regimen (which is always changing due to my dedication to educating myself) is Pharma GABA.  In PTSD and C-PTSD GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a calming neurotransmitter, is often reduced in the brain due to the chronic stress of the trauma (s).  The brain is a complicated system, but suffice it to say, that stress hormones like cortisol can disrupt production and function of GABA.  Studies have shown that Pharma GABA (a natural form of GABA) may be more effective in crossing the blood-brain barrier  while synthetic GABA is produced from chemicals that are considered toxic.

I encourage you to seek professional advice in creating the right supplemental healing regimen for you.  But remember, you are in charge of your healing journey.  Choose a practitioner that you can share with if something does not feel right for you.  Keep going – NEVER GIVE UP.
